Need a break? Looking for something entertaining? Need to add “charity contributor” to your CV? Play FreeRice.
It is as much fun as the word game on Virgin America and you feel like you actually accomplished something meaningful in the time you played.
Here’s how it works… You are given a word and asked to click on the definition that best defines that word. For every word you get right, 10 grains of rice are donated to the United Nations World Food Program.
Sure 10 grains of rice seems really feeble but I can attest to spending way too many hours playing this word game… and clearly a lot of other people are doing the same thing because since the site started on October 7th (just two weeks ago) there have been 137,769,030 grains of rice donated.
So who is making this donation you ask? The advertisers on the bottom of the page.
Although they say your vocabulary knowledge will improve, let’s face it — the point is to keep you interested. Not so that you can feed the poor but so that you spend more time on the site being exposed to the ad messages of the advertisers who are currently wearing the “Feed the Hungry” halo. I am not “judging” – I am just pointing out that fact that right now branding (and charity) is all about consumer interaction… I am a sucker for it… and apparently you are too.
